Lakeside Pulmonary Medicine, a breath of fresh air…

Our focus is to utilize our experience and expertise to provide patients and families care and support for what matters most to them on their health journey.

Welcome to Lakeside Pulmonary Medicine

Dr. Corey O’Brien, D.O., FCCP
Deacon Kimberly O’Brien, M.Div., BCC

Corey and Kim met as teenagers and their mutual love of the lake brought them together.  They built a relationship in spite of attending different schools and supported one another through the long journey of undergraduate, medical school for Corey and graduate school for Kim.  They’ve been married for over two decades and have three children.  Corey has been working in healthcare starting as a nurse aide from the age of 16 and always knew he wanted to be a physician.  Kim began her career as a chemical engineer, was a stay-at-home mom, then went to seminary to become an ordained minister and chaplain.  They have enjoyed Saint Joseph as visitors for the past 17 years and decided to make it their permanent home as they sought a lifestyle change from their current roles within conventional healthcare systems.  When they are not engaging their passion for caring for others, they enjoy walking the beaches of Lake Michigan, reading, and spending time with family.

We have been visiting St. Joe for the past 17 years and always imagined ourselves retiring here. In January 2024 we purchased a condo in town which allowed us to see more of the community than just as occasional visitors. The community spirit of connection, support and relationship resonated with the passion we have in our caretaking careers, and we began to imagine what it would be like to fully engage our vocations within this community.

Changes in our health and the aging process affect not only our physical bodies, but also our mind and spirit – these changes impact our ability to engage and enjoy what matters most in our lives. Spiritual and emotional support starts with understanding what matters most to you and your loved ones. It is the assurance that you are not alone as you experience changes in your health. Emotions can drive decision-making about healthcare, and acknowledging these feelings can facilitate making decisions that enable you to engage what matters most to you.

A chaplain is a trained professional who provides spiritual, emotional and psychosocial support in secular settings, serving people of faith or no faith. Chaplains respect diversity and provide care regardless of religion and spirituality. They will not preach specific creeds or ideology, but will listen with compassion.

Religion is an organized system of beliefs, practices, rituals and symbols used to connect to a higher power or concept. Religions often express forms of spirituality. Spirituality’s central aspects are meaning, purpose and connectedness within the human experience.

No, spiritual care is not billable, it is a service we provide at no cost to our patients and families.
